Key responsibilities
The Fiber Optic & Network Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of fiber optic systems and network infrastructure. This role requires a mix of technical expertise, field experience, and strong project management skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, install, and maintain fiber optic systems and network infrastructure to ensure optimal performance.
- Conduct fiber splicing, termination, and testing using tools such as OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) and power meters.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan and implement network expansions and upgrades.
- Perform network troubleshooting and resolve issues related to fiber optic connectivity, bandwidth, and performance.
- Manage fiber optic network documentation, including maps, splice diagrams, and installation records.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations during all fiber and network activities.
- Provide technical support and training to field technicians and junior engineers.
Desired candidate profile
Required Skills and Expertise:
- Strong knowledge of fiber optic principles, including splicing, cabling, and light signal transmission.
- Proficiency in fiber optic testing equipment and methodologies (e.g., OTDR, power meters).
- Solid understanding of networking protocols (TCP/IP, MPLS, OSPF, BGP) and technologies.
- Experience in configuring and maintaining network equipment such as switches, routers, and firewalls.
- Familiarity with FTTx (Fiber to the x) deployment and network design.
- Basic knowledge of cybersecurity practices related to network security.
Technical Requirements:
- Hands-on experience with fiber optic fusion splicing and testing.
- Ability to read and interpret network diagrams, blueprints, and technical documentation.
- Experience in structured cabling and physical network layer setup.
- Proficiency with software tools for network monitoring and management (e.g., Wireshark, SolarWinds).
Soft Skills:
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Strong project management capabilities to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- Minimum of 5-8 years of experience in fiber optic network engineering.
- Certifications such as CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician), CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate), or related industry certifications are a plus.
