Position Summary
The Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) will serve as the scientific visionary and strategic leader for
the organization’s research and development programs. The CSO will drive innovation, scientific
rigor, and cross-functional collaboration across genomics, molecular diagnostics, and clinical
research platforms. This executive will ensure that all scientific activities align with the lab’s
strategic goals, regulatory requirements, and mission to advance quality medical research and
diagnostics across Africa.

Scientific Strategy & Leadership:

• Define and lead the laboratory’s scientific vision, strategy, and innovation agenda.
• Oversee the planning, execution, and evaluation of all research and diagnostic

programs, including molecular and genomic diagnostics and BE/BA studies.

• Serve as the chief scientific spokesperson, both internally and externally, to build

credibility, partnerships, and visibility.

Program and Portfolio Oversight:

• Direct a multidisciplinary portfolio that includes research, diagnostic development, and

clinical trial support.

• Guide the prioritization and development of diagnostic panels, bioinformatics platforms,

and translational research initiatives.

• Establish metrics to track scientific performance and translational impact.

Innovation and Technology Integration:

• Identify and implement emerging scientific technologies, platforms, and methodologies

(e.g., NGS, AI in diagnostics, personalized medicine).

• Foster a culture of innovation across scientific and technical teams.

• Ensure all research and diagnostic activities comply with applicable regulatory, ethical,

and quality standards (e.g., GCP, GLP, CAP, CLIA, ICH-GCP, FDA/EMA).

• Serve as a scientific liaison with regulatory authorities and external partners.

Team Leadership and Talent Development:

• Build and mentor a high-caliber scientific team, including researchers, diagnostic

scientists, and program managers.

• Encourage professional development, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and a culture of

scientific excellence.

External Relations and Strategic Partnerships:

• Cultivate partnerships with academic institutions, research consortia, industry

stakeholders, and funding bodies.

• Lead grant acquisition and collaborative projects aligned with the organization’s scientific

mission.

Thought Leadership and Scientific Communication:

• Represent the organization at conferences, industry forums, and in publications.
• Ensure dissemination of research outcomes through peer-reviewed journals,

presentations, and white papers.

Qualifications:

• PhD, MD, PharmD, or equivalent advanced degree in Molecular Biology, Genomics,

Biotechnology, Clinical Research, or related life sciences.

• Minimum of 15 years of progressive scientific leadership, with at least 5–7 years at an

executive or senior leadership level in diagnostics, clinical research, or biotech/pharma
R&D.

• Demonstrated experience leading large-scale research or diagnostics programs, ideally

in genomics, molecular diagnostics, or BE/BA studies.

• Proven success in building scientific strategy, managing multi-disciplinary teams, and

fostering external collaborations.

• Deep knowledge of regulatory requirements, quality systems, and clinical trial

frameworks.
